Family-to-Family Education Classes - This class is for family members who have a loved one living with a mental illness. Learn about mental illnesses, identify resources, build communication skills, reduce stress and find support. Join others for this 12-week series taught by experienced family members. (The next 12-week Family-to-Family classes will be starting this September. Visit our website in July for dates, times, locations and registration information.)
When a Crisis Occurs (for Families) -
Preparing for an emergency or mental health crisis is important to ensure a good outcome. While each crisis plan is different, there are common elements. This workshop will explain the options, common elements and help families plan and prepare for a crisis.
Family Connections – Borderline Personality Class -
This 12-week course is for family members who have a loved one with Borderline Personality Disorder. The class provides the most current information on Borderline Personality Disorder, teaches coping skills based on Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and helps families develop a support network.
Advocacy on Purpose -
Learn how to advocate successfully with different parties; schools, legislators, mental health agencies, treatment centers and professionals. Learn different communication techniques, effective listening skills, documentation, record keeping, the art of negotiation and other important skills.
African American Children's Challenging Behaviors Classes -
Raising a child or adolescent with challenging behaviors can be difficult. Learn the five essential tasks to build confidence in your skills, improve the relationship with your child and create balance in your life.
Helping Students Succeed -
This workshop gives information to parents about special education services, the evaluation process, Individualized Education Programs (IEP), 504 plans, accommodations & modifications. Please RSVP to NAMI at 651-645-2948. Pizza and Childcare are available.
Kidshops - Why do they act that way? It’s not fair! It’s embarrassing! These complaints are often voiced by kids who have a parent or sibling with a mental illness. Kidshops provide a fun experience where kids join in activities, share concerns, get support and learn they are not alone. The classes are free and lunch is included. Registration is required, and parents will be asked a few questions to ensure your child is a good fit for Kidshops.
Parents and Teachers as Allies - Children with mental illnesses often have challenges at school. This workshop will help you partner with your child’s school by opening up the lines of communication and discussing ways to develop relationships with educators.
Tools, Tips and Techniques: Parenting a Child with a Disability - If you have a child with a disability, you know how challenging parenting can be. Join other parents to explore the challenges, share ideas, and create a plan for you and your child. This is a fun and interactive workshop intended to help support parents who are raising a child with a disability.
What Works, What Helps?
Treatment Options in Children's Mental Health -
When do you seek help for your child’s behavior? What information do you share with a professional? This workshop will help you learn: warning signs, diagnostic assessment process, and treatment options. All trainings are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. unless noted.
Keeping Families Together Trainings For Parents - Have you ever considered residential treatment for your child? What can you do when your child needs more care than can be provided at home? This workshop provides information on children's residential treatment, your rights as a parent when you place your child in treatment and how you can access mental health services for your child without giving up custody of your child. Held from 5:30-8:00 p.m.
Unlocking the Einstein Inside - This class is for professionals and parents seeking a better understanding of the effect cognitive skills – visual and auditory processing, working and long-term memory, and attention skills, among others – have on learning and emotional development.
African American Faith Initiative - Spirituality plays a very important role in the African American community. The church is often the first place families go to for help. This initiative opens the dialogue between faith communities, mental health professionals and families seeking culturally appropriate services and supports.
Allies in Recovery - Families can play an important role in a person’s recovery. This workshop covers issues that families have identified as important to them, such as: how to engage them, information sharing, and involvement in treatment planning.
Criminal Justice Training -
This interactive workshop offers an overview of the signs and symptoms of mental illness. It provides scenarios that offer specific techniques to help de-escalate a mental health crisis in a correctional setting. Contact Anna, 651-645-2948 x111.
Means Restriction Education- This training is for medical professionals and crisis responders in how to educate families on the importance of restricting access to lethal means when a family member is at risk of suicide. Training includes how to develop safe options for gun removal and storage, and how to secure medications.
Myths & Stigma-
This workshop, designed for African Americans, addresses the myths and stigma about mental illnesses and provides opportunities for family members to learn more about the programs and additional resources offered by NAMI Minnesota.
When a Crisis Occurs (for Professionals)- Professionals have unique challenges when facing someone who is having a mental health crisis. This workshop will focus on recognizing early warning signs, de-escalation tips and resources.
