Listed below are the current volunteer opportunities and how to get involved in each one. Receptionist: The receptionist will greet visitors and answer and direct phone calls. The receptionist will be the first point of contact for the office and will help set a friendly and helpful tone. This position will keep the busy NAMI Minnesota office running smoothly and allow staff to effectively use their time.
Location: NAMI Minnesota Office (800 Transfer Road, Suite 31; St. Paul MN 55114)
Time Commitment: Shifts are Monday – Friday from 9:30 am – 1 pm or 1 pm – 4:30 pm
Minimum of Two Shifts per Month with a Six Month Minimum Commitment

Office Assistant: Office assistants assist with a variety of tasks in the NAMI Minnesota office.

There are four positions available:
Office Assistant: Administrative: Office assistants complete bulk mailings, send out new member packets, fill orders, and assist with other office tasks.
Time Commitment: Volunteers can commit to a regular schedule or be on-call.

Office Assistant: Staff Assistant: The staff assistant will complete a variety of tasks for their supervisor each time they volunteer. By having regular assistance, staff will be able to be more productive and efficient in their work.
Time Commitment: Four Hours Every Other Week with a Six Month Minimum Commitment

Office Assistant: Computers: Office assistants complete data entry, do internet research, and create documents in Microsoft word and excel.
Time Commitment: Volunteers can commit to a regular schedule or be on-call.

Office Assistant: Outgoing Phone Calls: Office assistants make phone calls to gather information, as part of the membership renewal drive, and as reminders for special events and programs.
Time Commitment: This is an on-call position.

In Our Own Voice Presenter: In Our Own Voice (IOOV) is a public education program that includes a short video, personal testimony from two people living with a mental illness, and a question and answer period. The In Our Own Voice presenter will share their compelling personal story about living with mental illness and achieving recovery.
Location: Statewide
Time Commitment: Three Hours per Presentation, Four Presentations per Year with a One Year Minimum Commitment
Due to budget limitations, there may not be an opportunity for more than four presentations per year.
Qualification: Must be a person living with mental illness who is living well in recovery.

NAMI in the Lobby Volunteer : During NAMI in the Lobby, volunteers will be available during visiting hours at local hospitals that have inpatient psychiatric units. The NAMI in the Lobby volunteer will serve as a resource for families whose loved one is hospitalized. This may involve providing written information on mental illnesses or medications, offering booklets on commitment or the adult mental health system, steering families to NAMI Minnesota classes or support groups, or providing hope and support.
Location: Various Hospitals in the Twin Cities Metro Area; Time Commitment: Three Hours per Month with a One Year Minimum Commitment
Qualification: Must be a family member of someone living with a mental illness.

NAMIWalks Committee Member: The NAMIWalks committee helps plan the Minnesota NAMIWalks. The NAMIWalks committee member contributes to the big picture planning. Each committee member is also expected to join and take an active role in one subcommittee: in-kind donations, food and beverage in-kind donations, or marketing.
Location: NAMI Minnesota Office (800 Transfer Road, Suite 31; St. Paul MN 55114); Time Commitment: Six to Ten Hours per Month (March – October)

NAMIWalks Volunteer: At least 100 volunteers are needed during NAMIWalks. Volunteers assist with set up, clean up, registration, rest stops, and cheering. This is the largest anti-stigma event in Minnesota and funds NAMI Minnesota’s free support groups, education classes, and more.
Location: Minnehaha Park (4801 South Minnehaha Park Dr.; Minneapolis, MN 55417)
Time Commitment: Two to Six Hours on Saturday, September 25, 2010

Legislative Committee: The public policy and legislative committee works to influence legislation and public policies that affect the lives of children and adults living with mental illness, their families, and the professionals that who care for them. Public policy and legislative committee members attend monthly meetings, educate NAMI Minnesota members and elected officials, and lobby for legislation.
Location: NAMI Minnesota Office (800 Transfer Road, Suite 31; St. Paul MN 55114)
Time Commitment: Two to Ten Hours per Month

NAMI Minnesota’s support groups are peer based and provide a place that offers respect, understanding, encouragement, and hope. Facilitators are not counselors or teachers; rather, they are present primarily to give the group structure by opening and closing each support group session, guiding discussion, and shifting discussion when necessary.
NAMI Connection Facilitator: NAMI Connection is a support group for people living with mental illnesses. These groups are part of the larger NAMI Connection network of support available in 45 states.
Location: Statewide
Time Commitment: Two Hours per Week with a One Year Minimum Commitment
Qualification: Must be a person living with mental illness who is living well in recovery.

Deadline: Friday, October 1, 2010, for the November 12-14, 2010 Training
NAMI Vet Connection Facilitator: NAMI Vet Connection is a group for veterans with deployment experience.
Location: Statewide
Time Commitment: Two Hours per Week with a One Year Minimum Commitment
Qualification: Must be a veteran with understanding of the potential impacts of deployment.

Open Door Facilitator: Open Door are support groups for individuals with panic and anxiety disorders.
Location: Statewide
Time Commitment: Four Hours per Month with a Six Month Minimum Commitment
Qualification: Must be a person who has experienced anxiety and is living well in recovery.

Family-to-Family Support Group Facilitator: Family-to-Family is a support group for people who have a loved one living with mental illness.

Time Commitment: Three Hours per Meeting
One to Two Meetings per Month with a Two Year Minimum Commitment
Qualification: Must be a family member (child, parent, sibling, or partner) of someone living with a mental illness.

Parent Resource Facilitator: The parent resource group is support group for people who have a child living with a mental illness.
Location: Statewide
Time Commitment: Three Hours per Meeting
One to Two Meetings per Month with a Two Year Minimum Commitment
Qualification: Must be a parent of a child living with a mental illness.

Education Teacher
Family-to-Family Teacher: Family-to-Family is a twelve week course for family members who have a loved one living with mental illness. The curriculum focuses on mental illnesses, emphasizing the clinical treatment for each of the illnesses and teaching the knowledge and skills family members need to cope. The Family-to-Family teacher will co-teach the class with a partner.

Time Commitment: Four Hours per Week for Twelve Weeks, Two Class Minimum Commitment
Qualification: Must be a family member (child, parent, sibling, or partner) of someone living with a mental illness.
