Special Event Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in helping NAMI Minnesota provide education, support, and advocacy for people living with mental illnesses and their families. We offer a variety of peer-peer programming volunteer opportunities and limited internships for those wishing to support our mission and our organization. Volunteers may also serve with one of our local affiliates (no link) or help with special events.  Sign up to receive the Volunteer Update, our bi-monthly e-newsletter featuring resources and upcoming opportunities for both prospective and current volunteers.

Special Event volunteers are the backbone of our programs, and work behind the scenes to help plan, organize and run our events. Placement opportunities and details are listed below. To apply, please complete an online volunteer application, check “Special Events” and note any particular position that interests you. If you are a current NAMI volunteer and have a recent application on-file, there’s no need to re-apply - Just email volunteer.resources@namimn.org and include your name, contact information, and the placement/position you are interested in.

NAMIWalks Event Volunteer

The fourth Saturday in September, thousands of participants join together to combat stigma and raise funds for NAMI Minnesota during our annual NAMIWalks event. Hundreds of volunteers are needed on WALK day to assist with event set-up, clean-up, activities, and logistics. Volunteers help with one or more shifts (2-8 hours) during the event, which is held annually in Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis. The next NAMIWalks Minnesota is set for Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018.

Spring Gala Logistics Committee Member
Each Spring (usually between mid-April and early May) NAMI hosts its annual “Music for the Mind” Gala which features dinner, entertainment, and a silent auction. This annual fundraiser helps support NAMI Minnesota’s free peer-led support groups, educational programs and advocacy work. The Gala Logistics Committee Members contribute their time and energy to plan, prepare for, and implement this annual event. Duties include attending monthly committee planning meetings, soliciting sponsorships, procuring auction items, distributing publicity material, recruiting guests, and participating as a lead volunteer during the event. Candidates should have an interest in event planning and/or fundraising, feel comfortable asking for donations and soliciting support from business and community contacts, and be able to work independently to accomplish tasks between committee meetings. Volunteers are expected to be engaged in 5-10 hours of service per month from December through April, and must be available the week of the gala. The next NAMI's Spring Gala is set for April 28, 2018.

NAMIWalks Committee Member
Join the leadership team for one of the largest anti-stigma events in the state and ensure ongoing funding for NAMI Minnesota’s programs. NAMIWalks Committee Members help prepare for, organize, and execute the huge undertaking that is NAMIWalks – from the Kick-Off Breakfast through the Post-Walk Party. Duties include attending monthly committee planning meetings, soliciting donations, distributing publicity material, recruiting walkers and forming teams, and participating as a lead volunteer on-site during NAMIWalks events. Each committee member is also expected to take an active role on one subcommittee and perform tasks independently between committee meetings. Qualified applicants must be comfortable approaching personal, business, and community contacts and asking for donations. Candidates should be willing to commit to 5+ hours or service a month beginning in March, and participate as a lead volunteer on WALK day. Previous experience with NAMIWalks or a similar fundraising event in the past is ideal, but not required.

Mental Health Rally and Day at the Capitol Logistics Volunteer
Usually held in February or March. Logistics Volunteers help organize and manage the many moving pieces that make our advocacy efforts at the capitol run smoothly. Volunteers serve as capitol guides, distribute information to our members and to legislators, help set-up and manage our presence at the Rotunda and the briefing location, and help to inform and direct the crowds of passionate NAMI advocates. Candidates should have good interpersonal communication skills, the ability to represent NAMI in a professional manner, and an outgoing personality. Past experience with Mental Health Day at the Capitol and /or familiarity with the Capitol is ideal, but not required. Training will be provided. The next Mental Health Day at the Capitol will be held on March 15, 2018.
